Ailsa Johnson

Ailsa Johnson is an illustrator and designer who studied at Edinburgh College of Art. She has twice been highly commended in the Macmillan’s Children award and was the Children’s Cover Winner of the Penguin Design Award in 2016, with her cover design for Erich Kästner’s classic Emil and the Detectives. She counts Faber, Penguin Random House UK, Culture Trip, At The Table and Ben’s Farm Shop among her clients. Now living in Tokyo, the local colour, culture and energy pervade her illustrations.

The Journey 2 minutes

When you finish uni, there’s this huge energy to step out into the world and show people what you’ve got. I think a lot of people feel the same. This was one of my friends’ final projects. It was on repeat for days, so I had to put it in here.

Wednesday Campanella 4 minutes

Wednesday Campanella are just great. It was hard to pick just one video; they’re all over the place making all kinds of cool sounds. But this is their most recent one.

Garden Eels 1 minute

Sea creatures are just incredible, right? I had Blue Planet on video when I was younger and I would watch it constantly. Garden eels are one of my favourites. Plus this video has amazing music.

Chef's Table 2 minutes

Food is a big passion. I love Chef’s Table because yes, it’s all about food, but so much of it is about facets of creativity, history, location and personality. It’s as much about the creative process, the creative person and personal history as it is the product.

The Fall (2006) 4 minutes

This is probably my favourite film. It’s lush and bittersweet and a good classic bit of storytelling. It’s a nice balance of magical and miserable. The trailer gives a lot of the story away, so here’s a clip instead.
