Henry Lockyer

Henry Lockyer is a Director of Photography working across documentary, artist’s film, drama and commercial. He prizes the behind-closed-doors access that showing up in a new and not always welcoming place with a camera on his shoulder affords. He’s worked for the likes of Vice, Nike and the BBC (keep your eyes peeled for a new Reggie Yates doc hitting BBC2 very soon).

His playlist is a plethora of delights, including Carly Rae Jepsen memes, Jarvis Cocker in a darling hat, scarf and parka combo and skateboarder Neil Blender unwittingly demonstrating how “to stave off the sinking feeling social media gives you that you need to win, or even compete in the same game as everyone else”. Can’t ask better than that.

While this seemingly starts off as a sarcastic joke at the expense of some very 80s contest announcers (the raised fist ride away!) it becomes an important lesson. Stop worrying about what everyone else is doing, what’s deemed correct or cool. Make it up, be a weirdo, and entertain yourself. I watch this regularly to stave off the sinking feeling social media gives you that you need to win, or even compete in the same game as everyone else.

Intro To Memory Screen - Alien Workshop - 1991 4 Minutes

Growing up watching skate videos, the weird little arty clips in between tricks were just as important to me as the skating itself, and Alien Workshop’s videos were consistently the best example of this. The intro to Memory Screen (1991) is a mission statement for their aesthetic, like transmissions from earth reflected back from a distant star. Thinking how this was edited on a vhs tape to tape gives me a headache. The J Mascis soundtrack too. So perfect.

Jarvis Cocker’s Journeys Into the Outside Episode 1 - 1998 50 Minutes

A list of things that make this a great watch:
Jarvis Cocker’s soothing voice. Jarvis Cocker’s soothing voice attempting his best GCSE French. Jarvis’ parka, scarf & wooly hat. Jarvis’ navy blue 90s Jeep Grand Cherokee. Jarvis’ digital photos taken from a handycam with accompanying shutter sound effect.
Like the Neil Blender clip, this is another ode to pursuing your own unique goals, and creativity for creativity’s sake.

Intro To Solaris - 1972 4 Minutes

The colours, the pacing, the framing, the mystery, the blue jacket. The reason I always take a B-roll shot of reeds in water if there’s a stream at the location, regardless of how it will fit into the film we are making (none have made it in yet).

Run Away With Me Vine Compilation – Carly Rae Jepsen 2 minutes

Play Run Away With Me by Carly Rae Jepsen as the first dance at my wedding. Play it as I look into the eyes of my newborn child. Play it as they lower me into the ground.

John Fashanu - Johnny Was 2 Minutes

I had to include this not because it inspires me, but because it is almost certainly my most watched clip on youtube. People like to play the ‘Real Life Alan Partridge’ card a lot, but I think this may be the best example. The oddness of the pacing and sentence structure, explaining where Hollywood is, clarifying ‘terrestrial’. The final payoff. I don’t even know where to begin. A friend brought round the dvd of Johnny Was years after we discovered this clip, it was not a good watch.
