Validation 16 Minutes

Full disclosure, I’m not a big moving image person. I like films – and spent some time studying some pretty out there ones during my French degree – but I’ve never got mega excited about short little technical or experimental films (I’m looking at you music videos and art films). This short however, has stuck in my mind since I watched it ten years ago. It’s such a perfect little rom com. Technically imperfect, emotionally dead on.

Three Cheeky Whippets 2 Minutes

I LOVE DOGS. I haven’t yet shared this with someone who hasn’t loved it. It has everything; catastrophic destruction, THREE dogs, a weirdly calm Australian man lamenting his hat – it’s utterly wonderful.

NPR | Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes Tiny Desk Concert 14 Minutes

The Tiny Desk Concerts are an inspired idea. I particularly love this one because it reminds me to have faith that if your subjects are sufficiently captivating, the location in which you have to shoot them doesn’t really matter. There are so many of them crammed behind the desk, the shot is cramped and awkward, but as soon as they start playing nothing else matters. Their energy is wild and somehow the camera angles start working.

Welcome 4 Minutes

I watched my housemate (now studio mate), Ben make this over a year or so. Navigating backstage passes and film permissions – much like finding your way around the Barbican – it wasn’t an easy process. I’d seen the footage so many times as he edited, but when it finally all came together with music and the poem, it hit me square in the chest.

Notes On Blindness (initial short) 12 Minutes

This concept became a feature, but I still prefer this initial study. The idea of image and memory is something that’s always intrigued me and is something I’d love to think about more extensively – maybe I’ll do a masters one day. This short film emphasises with such deep, raw emotion the importance of images as vehicles for forming solid memories, especially when the formation of new visual memories becomes impossible. It’s beautifully filmed and utterly heartbreaking.

Fish Story 14 Minutes

Rather than identifying as an artist, I prefer to align with the storytellers and this is exactly the sort of project that I wish I’d found to document. The foundation of the story is basically people with fish surnames. It’s a glorious jumping off point into a funny conversation amongst two friends exploring a ridiculous family myth. It’s cute and funny and so incredibly visual. It also includes Michael Fish.
